Characters become relatable when they are confronted with situations where they have to decide how to act. The decision characterizes them. Do they try to avoid the situation? Do they go straight into it? Are they diplomatic? Another important thing in a story is conflict. Your characters want something and are faced with an obstacle, most likely another person. This person does not have to be a villain, but he or she should have different goals. Protagonist and antagonist should be connected. For example, Boss and Employee - Boss loves her company and will never leave it. Employee is not happy but gets a good salary, boss needs her, no other job available, responsibilities.

Your characters become interesting when they face inner conflicts. It makes them real. Your characters need to struggle in some situations so that they can grow and be stronger in the end. Also be aware that conflicts should rise slowly. Big jumps in conflict are confusing. Static conflicts are boring.

Be clear about the genre of your book. Your audience will want to know what they are reading before they start. And don't jump too far out of genre during the story. Your audience will not like it.

Every story has a premise. The one thing you are telling. Think about what is behind your story.
